Bulk versus packaged DEF: the full cost picture
The price per litre is only one component of supply cost. The complete comparison covers price + labour + waste + downtime risk. That's where bulk pulls ahead much earlier than most fleets expect.
Four supply formats compared
| Format | Typical fit | Hidden costs |
|---|---|---|
| 9.46 L jugs | 1 to 2 vehicles, top-ups | Highest $/L, constant store runs, plastic waste on every fill |
| 205 L drums | 3 to 5 vehicles | Pumping equipment, drum handling and deposits, part-used drums age |
| 1,000 L totes | 5 to 15 vehicles | Forklift handling, tote swaps, but $/L drops sharply |
| Tanker into your tank | 10+ vehicles / high-burn yards | Storage tank on site; lowest $/L, zero handling, zero packaging |
The costs that never appear on an invoice
- Labour: manual jug filling consumes paid yard hours; a plumbed dispenser reduces this to near zero
- Waste: a 20-truck yard on jugs generates thousands of discarded containers and boxes a year; bulk supply removes the packaging entirely
- Downtime risk: an empty DEF tank forces an engine derate; a scheduled refill program removes that risk entirely
- Quality: every open container is a contamination chance; sealed bulk transfer touches nothing on the way in

Common questions
At what volume does bulk DEF make sense?
As a rule of thumb, once a yard consistently uses more than a few hundred litres a month, roughly 3 to 5 trucks, tote or tanker supply beats jugs on cost per litre, labour and waste.
Do I need to buy a storage tank?
Not necessarily. Programs often start with a 1,000 L tote and dispensing kit. Larger stationary tanks with pumps come later, when volume justifies them. We spec and supply the equipment as part of the program.
Is bulk DEF the same quality as jugged DEF?
Yes. All DEF must meet ISO 22241 regardless of package. What changes with bulk is handling: fewer touches, sealed transfer into your tank, and less chance of contamination from part-used containers.
