How to choose a DEF storage tank
The right storage makes bulk DEF work: big enough that refills are calm and scheduled, specified so the fluid stays in specification from our tanker to your filler neck.
Start with consumption, not catalogues
Storage sizing is a consumption question. Take your monthly DEF use (roughly 3 to 5% of diesel burned; the calculator does the math) and hold at least six weeks of it, so a scheduled delivery arrives with margin rather than drama.

The specification points that matter
- Material: stainless steel or HDPE poly. DEF attacks carbon steel, copper and aluminum, including in pumps and fittings
- Sealed, dedicated equipment: contamination is the main quality risk; DEF hardware must never be shared with other fluids
- Winter plan: indoors, or insulated and heated outdoors (DEF freezes at -11°C; see the winter guide)
- Metering: a calibrated meter turns every fill into a documented, reconcilable quantity
- Placement: reachable by the delivery tanker, close to where trucks fill, on a surface that handles a spill cleanly

Does a DEF tank need to be indoors?
No, but outdoor tanks in Canada need insulation and heating, since DEF freezes at -11°C. Indoor placement avoids that cost when floor space allows.
What materials are safe for DEF storage?
Stainless steel and HDPE poly are the standard choices. DEF is corrosive to carbon steel, copper and aluminum; wetted parts must be DEF-compatible, including pumps, hoses and fittings.
