Preventing DEF contamination
SCR systems tolerate impurities measured in parts per million. Most contamination happens in the yard, in handling, and every case of it is preventable with the same few habits.
Where contamination actually comes from
- Shared equipment: a jug, funnel or pump that ever touched diesel, coolant or washer fluid
- Open containers: part-used jugs left unsealed collect dust and moisture
- Wrong materials: carbon steel, copper, brass and aluminum leach into DEF on contact
- Dirty filler necks: grit around the truck's DEF cap rides in with the fill
- Out-of-spec supply: fluid that was mishandled before it ever reached you
The handling rules
- Dedicate everything: DEF-only pumps, hoses, nozzles and containers, marked so nobody improvises
- Keep it sealed: closed-transfer from storage to truck; no open buckets, no unsealed part-jugs
- Use compatible materials only: stainless or HDPE for every wetted part
- Wipe the neck before every fill and cap containers immediately after use
- Store cool and covered: heat degrades DEF over months (full storage guidance in the winter guide and the tank guide)
- Never add anything: no water, no additives, nothing (ISO 22241 or it does not go in the tank)

What happens if DEF gets contaminated?
The SCR system is sensitive to impurities measured in parts per million. Contaminated DEF can foul the doser and catalyst, trigger derates, and lead to repairs that cost far more than the fluid ever saved.
Can I top up DEF with distilled water?
No. DEF is a precise 32.5% urea solution to ISO 22241. Diluting it puts it out of specification and the quality sensor will eventually flag it, at best.
How do I know my bulk DEF is in spec on delivery?
Buy from a supplier whose transfer is sealed and documented. Our tanker deliveries are metered, closed-transfer drops into dedicated DEF storage, ticketed on every fill.
